The Australian Government realises that sometimes it’s hard to find work in your local area and the only way to get a job is if you’re willing to move. It can be difficult to move from your family home and establish a new home when you’re starting a new job, but the Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA) can make it easier.
What is the Living Away From Home Allowance?
The Living Away From Home Allowance is an allowance paid to eligible Australian Apprentices in the first three years of their training.
How Much Will You Be Paid?
An Australian Apprentice eligible to receive the allowance may receive $77.17 a week for up to 12 months, $38.59 a week for a further 12 months and $25.00 a week for a third 12 months.
Who Is Eligible?
You may be eligible to receive the allowance if you have to move away from your family or legal guardian’s home in order to:
- Take up an Australian Apprenticeship position; or
- Remain in an Australian Apprenticeship position; or
- Receive essential supplementary on-the-job training with another employer.
You may also be eligible to receive the allowance if you are homeless.
